THE PSALMS

Throughout the ages people have been able to identify with the emotions described in the words of the Psalms, for these poems express human life in its range of joys, sorrow, and confusing doubts, all within a framework that relates to God. In my personal life too, the Psalms have played a special role; they have challenged me, comforted me and strengthened my faith. These experiences were used by the Holy Spirit as a basis for the creation of the images you see in these series of paintings.

One particular psalm, more than any other, often speaks powerfully to a person; therefore I have ended up making more than one painting of some psalms. Together the paintings in these 'sets' support the strong emotions evoked by that psalm.

Dark versus light is one characterestic feature of the paintings in these series. The dynamic movement in these compositions is far stronger and more powerful than in the works of the previous series, on the Creed. The colours, often used symbolically, are rich and vibrant here, and in some cases, stark in their contrasts. Colleges are used in approximately half the works to add texture to the images. All the paintings are of an 80 to 120 cm size dimension and have been painted with mixed mediums on plexiglass.

Over a period of four years I have worked with much joy on this series of 25 paintings. For me, painting is a Spirit-led search, struggling with the mediums, changes, adding, erasings, for  eventually the image to emerge, which captures the deep emotions I experienced in response to particular Bible verses. I long that these struggling expressions may enrich you in your personal meditations on the Psalms.
